Today the world marks International Day of the Girl…and I am spending it with one of the most important girls in my world:  My daughter.  And, as always, just a few minutes with her is all it takes before I realize that this is an amazing time to know amazing girls like her.

Work takes me to New York City today.  It will be 48 hours filled with meetings, convenings, and people talking about the importance of girls to the future of our world.  I wanted my 8-year-old to come with me to witness the day first-hand.  She is a young woman who is as strong as she is sensitive…and I thought she might learn something from the things she would hear and people she would meet.

The words are hers.  The feeling is mutual.  This little girl, talking about what it means to be a girl, makes me proud to be part of this day.

Why It’s Great to Be a Girl

When I was a little my favorite t-shirt said, “Girls can Save the World!”  I still believe that is true.  Girls are special because they are strong and fierce but also kind at the same time.  If you think back in time when women could not vote, have a job, own property or even make big decisions.  Think back and picture the strong, brave women that had that much strength to do that using her…HEART AND BRAIN!

So I am proud to be a girl because I am going to do great things!  (Use your heart!)

  1. Dear young cousin Julia. With parents like your Mom and Dad behind you I have no doubt that you will be very successful in whatever you choose to do in your adult life.
