Truth in Advertising

It is so refreshing when someone or something so fully lives up to the promise of its public billing. Too often things fall short of what (we) communicators or marketers claim they can be. Last week I was introduced to something that was absolutely and positively what it claimed to be…delicious. If I could send each of you a sample, I would. I can’t, so instead I’ll write about it. You can thank me (or blame me for the calories) later.

A trusted friend introduced me to something that she claimed was “absolutely delicious…pricey but tasty.” Of course, it was a gourmet ice cream. This is not something that should be high on the priority list for a person like me who is trying to cut back on calories and indulgent food purchases. But it was a gift, and something being offered by one of my favorite people. Totally justifiable, right? So it did not take a lot of begging to get me to try it out. The words on the card and gift certificate “absolutely delicious” were intriguing. A lot to live up to…

I immediately made my way down to the neighborhood gourmet shop where they sell Jeni’s Ice Cream. The salesperson told me as we chatted about the flavors and options that it was “absolutely as delicious as it was creative.” By this point the “absolutely delicious” phrase was clearly in my mind. Jeni’s had done a good job of getting certain words in to people’s minds and mouths. I had to check out how Jeni’s was using words to describe its product.

This homegrown American product (proudly touting its Columbus, Ohio roots) used clever language as part of its packaging. Words like “luxurious, exhilarating, splendid” and clever use of “palate-gripping” were part of the packaging and flavor descriptions. In fact, the flavor descriptions are worth a read here. Anyone from a foodie to a grammarian can appreciate the way they have quilted together the descriptions…making a flavor menu a truly beautiful thing to read.

What was so refreshing about the product was that it lived up to the buzz other people were creating about it. It is, simply put, “absolutely delicious.” And I couldn’t find that phrase anywhere on the packaging or the web advertising. But its true.

So hats off “and belts loosened!” for Jeni’s Ice Cream. In a world of turbulence and strife, it’s good to find comfort food that lives up to its name, is true to its reputation, and is another reason it’s good to have good friends…especially those who introduce you to absolutely delicious parts of life.
